A Silver Sister’s 30 year Hair Journey

by | Feb 12, 2021 | 0 comments

I sat down with Silver Queen Beverly Kirkland last summer before I started my blog.

We chatted outside of her Brooklyn Brownstone and discussed the ups and downs of her gray journey through the years. I’ve said many times, we newbie Silver Sisters are late to the party and we are blessed to be on the cusp of the narrative towards aging and gray changing towards the positive instead of the age old stereotypes that accompany gray hair.

Merry Christmas from our house to yours! Thank you for stopping by.
Just a reminder that Christ Jesus is the reason for the Season, and gave us the greatest gift of all-eternal life.

“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”Isaiah 9:6

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
1 John 5:11

Brooklyn, early 1960s.
Four years old. Wide-eyed. Holding court on Santa’s lap like I had a list and opinions.

This was likely downtown on Fulton Street, at the old A&S — back when department stores felt magical, Santa felt real, and Brooklyn at Christmas had a hum you could feel in your bones. The giant Christmas tree near the elevators, and there were so many people shopping you could barely move! The kind of place where moms dressed you up, dads waited patiently, and the city felt smaller, safer, and full of promise.

I can almost smell the waffles in McCrory’s, hear the street noise outside, feel the excitement of being seen and remembered. A little girl in a big city, already soaking it all in. These are the moments that shape us — before life layers us up, before time speeds ahead.

Proof that nostalgia isn’t just memory… it’s feeling. And some of it never leaves you.

Brooklyn raised me. Christmas held me. And that little girl is still right here.
