The Two-Year Gray Hair Journey: What to Expect and How to Rock It

by | Aug 4, 2024

Once upon a time, my hair was black, then it was dark brown, then mahogany, then ash brown, then ash blonde. When my gray hairs came in fast and furious, I had to dye my hair lighter and lighter to mask them, until the bleaching and dyeing fried and damaged my hair. I finally gave up the dye at the end of 2018. No regrets.

But what does the two-year gray hair transition actually look like? Buckle up, because we’re about to take a deep dive into every twist and turn of the silver road.

The Timeline and Stages

Month 1-3: The Decision Phase

Your first milestone is simply making the decision to go gray. This is both liberating and terrifying. The key here is to give yourself grace. You are beautiful and worthy, no matter what. Some things that helped me through the early transition– hats, braids, and a strong support system!

Month 4-6: The Initial Transition

Get ready for what many call the “awkward stage.” During these months, you’ll start to see a mix of your natural gray and the old dyed hair. This can be a challenging time, visually and emotionally. Embrace it with confidence and authenticity. You can try blending techniques, like lowlights or highlights, or even experiment with new hairstyles to help ease this phase. Remember, this stage is temporary, and each day brings you closer to your true, beautiful self. Own it and let it be a testament to your strength and resilience. Typically, around six months in, you can finally start to see the glory of your silver crown shining through and you start feeling yourself and walking in confidence about the decision.

Month 7-12: The Growing Pains

During these months, your confidence can waver as you transition further from your dyed hair to your authentic silver locks. Continue experimenting with hair care routines that highlight your gray hair’s radiant quality. Products specifically designed for silver hair, like nourishing masks and anti-frizz serums, can help keep your locks looking their best. Embrace your evolving look with chic hairstyles that show off your gray while reflecting your unique personality. The growing pains are just another step towards the gorgeous, gray-haired vision you are becoming. Keep going, and let your silver hair shine as brightly as your spirit.

Month 13-18: The Halfway Mark

Congratulations, you’ve reached the halfway mark! By now, your hair is most likely at least 50% gray, and you’ve learned a lot about caring for and styling your silver strands. This is a great time to reflect on how far you’ve come and to celebrate your progress. If you haven’t already, consider getting a professional trim from a stylist who specializes in gray hair. They can help shape your hair as it continues to grow out and give you tips on how to manage any stubborn patches of color.  You can read about my halfway point milestones HERE!

As you continue to embrace your natural beauty, don’t be afraid to play with different makeup looks or try new fashion styles that compliment your silver locks. Use this opportunity to discover what makes you feel confident and empowered as a woman with gray hair. Also, don’t forget to regularly nourish your hair with deep conditioning treatments and regular trims to maintain its health and shine. With each passing month, your silver strands will continue to grow stronger, and so will your confidence in embracing them.

Month 19-24: The Home Stretch

Now that you’ve crossed the halfway mark, it’s time to truly own your gray hair. This phase is all about confidence and self-expression. Lean into the beauty and individuality your gray hair brings. Remember, this journey is not just about appearance—it’s a testament to your resilience and authenticity. Here are a few tips to help you embrace this stage:

  • Experiment with Colors: Try incorporating new colors into your wardrobe that complement your gray hair. Jewel tones and pastels can enhance the silver hues in your hair.
  • Accessorize Boldly: From statement earrings to vibrant scarves, accessories can highlight your gray hair and bring a fresh pop of style to your look.
  • Skincare: As your hair color changes, consider adjusting your skincare routine. Using products that add radiance to your skin can help create a harmonious balance between your complexion and hair.
  • Regular Trims: Keep your hair looking its best with regular trims to prevent split ends and maintain a polished appearance.

Embracing Your Transition with Confidence

Transitioning to gray hair can be a beautiful journey. It’s about celebrating your natural beauty and letting go of society’s expectations. With the right approach, you can make this shift both graceful and stylish.

At first, we laughed.
“Did you take out the trash?”“I don’t have any cash!”
Cute… until it wasn’t.

Little miscommunications have a way of piling up. What starts as funny can slowly turn into frustration. Repeating yourself. Missing details. Feeling disconnected in your own home.
The truth? Hearing loss as we age is more common than people talk about — and pretending it’s “no big deal” doesn’t make it go away.

On this #WorldHearingDay, we’re sharing something personal.
Dave decided to try the Ceretone Core One Pro — an over-the-counter hearing device designed for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. No complicated setup. Discreet design and they sit in the ear, so his glasses fit comfortably.. Four hearing modes for different environments. And a battery that keeps up with real life
But here’s what mattered most to us:
We stopped missing each other.
Conversations feel easy again. The TV isn’t blasting. Nature sounds like nature. And I’m not repeating myself five times a day (which, let’s be honest, was not cute).
Hearing support didn’t just change what he hears.It changed how we connect.
This is our personal experience and is not intended as medical advice — just a reminder that clarity matters. And asking for support isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.
Because when you stop missing words…you stop missing moments.

Psalms 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Psalm 14:1 The fool has said in his heart,“ There is no God.”

The majesty of God’s creation speaks for itself.
 • Order implies intelligence.
* Law implies a law-giver.
* Design implies a designer.
You don’t walk into a cathedral and assume a tornado assembled it.
Earth rotates at roughly 1,000 miles per hour at the equator.
And yet… you don’t feel it.

Gravity is silent. Invisible. Relentless.
It holds:
* You to the ground
* The oceans in their basins
* The atmosphere wrapped around Earth
* The Moon in orbit
* The planets circling the Sun
*
Mountains aren’t just pretty backdrops for Instagram.
They:
* Regulate climate patterns
* Drive rainfall distribution
* Anchor tectonic balance

Just some things to ponder if you think this earth was created by some Big Bang. I’m sorry but a big bang can’t even wash and put away the dishes.

I Thrifted this neon green dress, and I can’t tell whether it’s vintage or not. The fabric feels like those slinky knits from the 1990s early 2000s. Either way I’m not gonna keep it. It does not flatter my figure. IYKYK IF. It makes me look shorter, so I covered it with a cardigan and some knee-high boots to make it work.
If you’re interested in this dress, send me a DM. It’s it says a size Large.

A little late, but this is another one of my favorite verses. I’ve been at rock bottom a time or two in this ole life. We all have, haven’t we?
If not for God, and His word keeping me afloat during those times, I don’t know where I’d be. We can’t trust in or count on man, can we?
But God…🙏🏽

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19

Can I get an Amen? Have a blessed week and stay warm Fam.❤️

It doesn’t matter how good we think we are, fact is we are all fallen beings.
